Taken for Granted

From my last visit to Indonesia, I noticed that I took pictures of things which I never did before. See here pictures of my lunch in Sogan Village or bunch of tropical fruits. I took more pictures of simple things like this as if I was a tourist. I had to laugh to myself. The truth is I don't take things for granted anymore because in the country where I live now, the Netherlands, I don't see this type of mango or having the same type of lunch as I had in Yogyakarta.

Before, when I visited the Netherlands, I took a lot of pictures of everything, from windmills to street furniture. Now I accompanied a lot of guests and no single picture I have taken.
Again, this is what Pak Tukiman said to me during our walk in Sogan Village two weeks ago. We have a tendency to neglect the near heritage and look for something far away. We have a tendency to take things for granted until those things disappear and difficult to get.

SOCIAL HOUSING IN IPOH: WALLER COURT

I visited the social housing in Ipoh called Waller Court. This is a huge complex consists of 17 block apartements including a 15 storey tower consisting of 288 units. This complex was built in 1962 by the  Ipoh Municipal Council to house low income families. Until 2017 it is occupied by about 350 families.  The condition of Waller Court is quite deplorable. The local newspaper (Star, 9 October 2017) even called it as a haunt for drug addicts and thieves. There was a plan from the local government to demolish this huge complex and use the ground for new development of other purposes such as new flats and commercial blocks. Nevertheless, the plan is not implemented yet until end of 2018.   Waller Court is in a very strategic location and green parts of Ipoh. Despite the horror looks of the buildings, the surrounding area is very pleasant and inviting. Huge and tall trees are elegant and comforting in tropical humid climate.

ECOMUSEUM

The idea of ecomuseum is relatively not popular in Indonesia although the country has a lot of potential to create many of it. I have visited few of them and one situation that I found is that all these museums need more activities for visitors. It is not only the case of Indonesia, when I visited an ecomuseum in Sweden, the same case occured. It is run by volunteers and they can only afford running activities on certain times in a year. Probably an ecomuseum needs a lot of resources to run in terms of financial and labour. That is why an ecomuseum mostly quiet. But when the resources are available, it can be a lively place to visit. I have visited the Openluch Museum in Arnhem, Holland, which is visited by bus and bus of tourists everyday. They have subsidies and human resources. Perpaduan antara bangunan lama dan baru selalu menarik perhatian saya karena saya percaya pelestarian pusaka (heritage conservation) haruslah aktual dan menjawab kebutuhan zaman.
