Bandung, October 2023 The end of 2023 gets closer. I am thankful for the health, safety, and opportunities that I have this year. The year started with good walks to the countryside of Austria. I had to thank my Austrian friends who introduced me to the beauty of nature, the farming life, and also the rich culture of a big city like Vienna. I fell in love with the philosophy of the architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser: inspired by and back to nature. In the spring, I had to thank my senior, Donovan Rypkema, who introduced me to his heritage networks and works around Washington DC. I learned a lot about revitalization of the historical districts of the city. I continued my journey with the train adventures following the history of the Dutch along the Hudson River until the border of Canada. The experience with WWOOF USA impressed me. I think I will do it again, in another country next year. Staying in new surroundings with new people deli...

On 8 November 2023 I gave an update about Water, Culture, and Heritage of Indonesia in the Amsterdam International Water Week. This is a continuation of my involvement in the effort to promote the subject for several years already. In 2020 I joined a conference in Tokyo and in March 2023 I joined another conference in New York. This time I told about the use of the Historic Urban Landscape method for water-based cities of Indonesia, for example Banjarmasin in South of Kalimantan. Second, I updated about an effort to organize a side event during the 2024 World Water Forum in Bali. The side event will focus on water and local wisdom for livelihood.

(Medan, 2002) The military secured the Mega Eltra building at the day that Sumatra Heritage Trust demonstrated to protest the plan to demolish the building. Finally, the military demolished the building in an assignment of the owners (investors) supported by the Municipality of Medan. (Medan, 2023) Warenhuis is guarded 24/7 by the military to secure the building that will be renovated and rebuilt this year as new commercial and cultural centre initiated by the Municipality of Medan. The Mayor of Medan has freed the building from the illegal occupants, conducted conservation research, and assigned Sumatra Heritage Trust to assist with the revitalization program, not only the building, but also the surrounding area of Kesawan. There are 21 years span in the two events that show how different the roles of the military, the Municipality of Medan, and Sumatra Heritage Trust, in heritage conservation of historical buildings.

HERITAGE IS MULTIDICIPLINES

HERITAGE IS MULTIDICIPLINES From the beginning, I realize that Indonesia needs to build its institutional infrastructure to empower the development of the heritage sector. It is about saving the identity of the nation that covers a relatively wide range of fields and angles. In theory, an action to cherish a kind of heritage involves many kinds of expertise. In practice, the action is often approached narrowly only by a kind of expertise. Coordination and collaboration seldom happen in the academic or non-academic sectors. The establishment of two museums about the plantation history called Museum Perkebunan Indonesia, or MUSPERIN, in 2016, might be an appropriate case study to prove that a heritage project needs a multidiscipline approach. The museums are located in Medan, the city that grew due to the development of the plantation industry in the 20th century during the colonial era. The case study of MUSPERIN shows how important to blend all kinds of expertise. 1. ...

I went to New York City for a side event of the UN-Water Conference , in Harlem Stage, on 20 March 2023. Together with many participants, we shared our experiences and research about Water and Heritage. We tried to put heritage on the agenda of the UN. This event was a follow-up event in Tokyo, in 2018, in which I participated, too. The ICOMOS Netherlands was and is the leading power behind this idea. It has been a long journey and the journey is not ended yet. I shared my involvement in the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) Quick Scan Method Workshops in two water-based cities Muntok and Banjarmasin, Indonesia. It was a humble contribution but I was grateful that I could share it on behalf of the HUL Quick Scan Method team. The week was in the atmosphere of water, planned and not planned. The venue was Harlem Stage , a former water-processing building that is adapted into a cultural stage for colored artists, not far from the Hudson River. My homestay was on the 31 floors in...
HISTORICAL COLOURS

On Thursday 9 February, I attended an event at the World Heritage Site of Veenhuizen, Drenthe, about the research on the historical colors of Veenhuizen. I had to drive 1,5 hours but I did it, and later it turned out to be worth driving. The field of historical colors is very specific. In the case of Veenhuizen, the research was done not only about the colors of the buildings but also about the surrounding nature like trees and even the sand. The result is a publication that can be used by all stakeholders, including all owners of historical buildings there, as a guide in terms of color options. I felt lucky to be able to attend this event, and also got a copy of the guide. It is my way of learning as an autodidact in cultural heritage. More information about the research is here.

Exhibition Nijkerk and the Dutch East Indies The exhibition 'Nijkerk and the Dutch East Indies' can be seen in Museum Nijkerk until March 2023. For the first time, the story is told of a small town's ties to the world's fourth-largest country by population. In the exhibition 'Nijkerk and the Dutch East Indies', visitors walk through the history of the Indonesian archipelago and stop at those events that are related to the city of Nijkerk. There appear to be many Nijkerkers who have worked in the Indies, from plantation owners and lawyers to teachers and soldiers and their families. It has been an honor for me to be guided by the Curator, Saskia van den Berg, to enjoy the exhibition and to listen to the stories behind it. There is a strong tie between Nijkerk with plantations in the East Coast of Sumatra, Padang, the Eijkman Institute (a Nobel prize winner), and many more. I have had a small contribution by introducing Siedjah or Siebrigje Bremer, a Dutch sch...

Fort Van den Bosch or Fort Pendem as the local name is founded in 1839 in Ngawi, a small town on the border of Central Java and East Java, along the river Bengawan Solo. Efforts to restore and re-use the Fort was initiated and fully funded by the Indonesian government under the responsibility of the Ministry of PUPR (Public Works and Human Settlements) in coordination with the military authorities as the owner of the Fort and the Ngawi local government. The restoration process of the Fort van den Bosch started in 2020 and will be ready in early 2023. Hopefully, new functions such as hotels, museums, and offices will take place soon here. Last October I visited the Fort van den Bosch and talked to Wawan Sudarmawan, Dimas Candra, and Bayu Arga who are responsible for the construction and engineering management. They said that they have learned a lot but also found many unanswered puzzles during the restoration process. Contacts with fort experts in the Netherlands should be he...
