GETSEMANI, A LIVELY NEIGHBORHOOD OF CARTAGENA. COLOMBIA
The buffer zone of a
world heritage city like Getsemani in Cartagena, Colombia offers more realities
than the core zone walled city Cartagena itself.
The core zone (the
walled city of Cartagena de Indias) has transformed into a touristic and
commercial district but unfortunately missing dynamic of local life and very
quiet in the evening especially in residence areas.
Getsemani, located few
hundred meter outside the walled city, is on the contrary still intact as an
urban living area with compounds and alleys occupied by the locals. Many of
them transform some bedrooms into tourist accommodation and offer meals in the
living room but not (yet) letting the tourists to dominate the scenes.
In the afternoon and
evening the main square and alleys are filled with music, dance and street
food. One or two fancy restaurants and accommodation facilities start to
quietly occupy spaces but most are still in the hands of lower middle class
owners who try their best to keep their properties look nice transformed
into small restaurants, cafe or bed and breakfast.
