Pada hari Rabu, 27 Juli 2022, Johannes Adiyanto (dosen Prodi Arsitektur, Fakultas Teknik, Universitas Sriwijaya) membagi pengalaman pribadinya berkaitan dengan penelitian tentang karya-karya arsitek Belanda, Thomas Karsten, pada diskusi bulanan Pansumnet. Moderatornya Dr. Al Busyra Fuadi, ST., M.Sc (dosen Prodi Arsitektur, Universitas Bung Hatta, Padang).  Herman Thomas Karsten (Amsterdam, 22 April 1884 - Cimahi, 21 April 1945) merupakan nama yang terkenal dan sering menjadi rujukan sekaligus bahan penelitian baik dalam konteks tata kota maupun arsitektur di Indonesia, terutama jika mengacu pada rentang waktu 1900 hingga 1940-an. Amsterdam is famous for its canals and old buildings but the city has also a relatively rich collection of modern architecture. One of them is Kleiburg, in Amsterdam Southeast, a building with more than 500 apartments. Kleiburg is part of Bijlmermuseum, an open-air and living museum consisting of a built environment (6 appartment buildings, 1100 meter metro viaduct, and green space) that has been built between 1967 and 1972 in the area called Bijlmermeer, Amsterdam Southeast. Since 2019 all elements and areas of the Bijlmermuseum gain status as the protected cityscape of Amsterdam.  The apartment building of Kleiburg was built in 1969 and ready in 1971.  The whole building was closed from January 2009 until 2012 for a new plan. The effort to disseminate the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) Recommendation in Indonesia has been going on since 2018 through the workshops in Muntok, South of Sumatra (2018), and Banjarmasin, South of Kalimantan (2019) and the publication of the handbook of HUL Quick Scan Method for University Lecturers (2021).  Both workshops and the publication of the handbook were cooperation of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and Heritage hands-on, with the Indonesian stakeholders namely Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Trisakti, and Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB). In conjunction with the Revolusi! Exhibition , Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jakarta have organized an Expert Meeting in the Netherlands on 16-20 May 2022 for the six Indonesian museums that have lent their collections for the exhibition. They have seen and discussed the exhibition on the first day of the Expert Meeting, and also exchanged information about lending museum collections and public education programs. For the rest of the week, they have visited various depots and museums, especially those that have collections and plans for exhibitions about Indonesia.  This kind of program is a long-term visioned effort for both countries to enhance cooperation, build understanding, and bridge gaps, in museum development and the possibilities of exchange collections in the future. Para arsitek di Medan membantu Museum Perkebunan Indonesia (Musperin) untuk mentransformasi gedung bersejarah AVROS dan BKPPS yang sangat cantik menjadi museum-museum yang hidup dan menarik. Transformasi sebuah gedung menjadi museum bukan pekerjaan mudah bagi para arsitek. Selain itu, mendirikan museum yang secara ekonomi bisa mandiri dan secara sosial bisa berkontribusi pada masyarakat juga menjadi tantangan bagi para pekerja museum. Ada referensi dalam Bahasa Inggris (2019, Job Roos, Dorus Hoebink, Arjen Kok, Metamorphosis: Transformation of Dutch Museums, ISBN 9789463661805) yang mungkin bisa menjadi inspirasi bagi para arsitek dan pekerja museum di Indonesia. On 29 April 2022 Sumatra Heritage Trust or in Indonesian called BWS (Beranda Warisan Sumatra) celebrated its 24th anniversary. As one of the founders and the former Executive Director (1998-2005), I am happy for them and proud that the younger generation continues the ideal to raise awareness about cultural heritage. It has never been easy and will never be easy to keep the ideal and to share it with many stakeholders for a long time.  An ideal can fade away easily. It needs to be communicated continuously and promoted tirelessly. What helps is that we are passionate about cultural heritage. Passions keep us all motivated. At least that is my experience. After more than 30 years of working and being active in cultural heritage, I never get bored with cultural heritage. I see cultural heritage everywhere I go and that makes my work interesting, always.  I do hope that BWS will survive for another 24 years, another 24 years, and another 24 years. Always happy to get in touch with friends and colleagues from the field during the webinar of Pansumnet about manual documentation of vernacular architecture in  Muntok, South Bangka, Sumatra by Vernadoc Indonesia.   Vernadoc tries to document vernacular architecture manually. A skill that is fading away for the younger generation. It takes time of putting all information on paper with a pencil and pen. As the speaker, Prof. Dr, Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, said, it is a slow process of understanding and loving the vernacular architecture. You wouldn't do it if you are in rush.  A kind of mindfulness exercise especially for the young architects.

  February 17, 2022, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands has apologized to Indonesia for what the Netherlands has done during the period of 1945-1949. A deep excuse, he said. This is the third time that the representatives of the Netherlands apologize to Indonesia. In 2005, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the first, and in 2020 the King of the Netherlands was the second. The third apology followed the launching of the results of the multiyear research on Independence, Decolonization, Violence and War in Indonesia 1945-1950.  The launching began early in the morning through a live stream in two languages (Dutch and English). Legal protection of historical buildings and sites has been a long struggle in Indonesia. It is important to establish a solid legal base as a foundation for the heritage movement in the long run. And that is only a fraction of the whole story because after the legal base is set up, another challenge comes up how to enforce the law and regulation into practice.  Medan and Sawahlunto are two of the examples in Indonesia as cities that have been trying to have effective local regulations to protect historical buildings and sites. The monthly discussion of the Pan-Sumatra Network for Heritage Conservation (Pansumnet) on 29 December 2021 was about the efforts of Rapanie Igama, a library expert,  to save the Ulu alphabet in the South of Sumatra. When I asked how many local languages, dialects, and alphabets exist in his area, the answer is astonishing: more than 70 dialects. And that is only in one province or area of South Sumatra!  It was more astonishing when other language experts, Sarwit Sartono from the University of Bengkulu and Prof. Dr. Uli Kozok from Hawaii also joined and enlighten the audience about the Ulu alphabets. Those alphabets are actually the doors to much local wisdom about daily life that are actual now such as environmental issues, agriculture, and many more. I am humbled to get involved in multi-year cooperation (2018-2021) between Indonesia and the Netherlands to organize a series of training about museum management.  The involved organizations are the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Republic Indonesia. From the Netherlands is the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, Reinwardt Academie, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jakarta.  The previous training took place in Yogyakarta and Jakarta (2018), Semarang and Malang (2019). Unfortunately, the covid19 pandemic has blown away the plan to organize two training in 2020. So here we are at the end of 2021 with two hybrid training (live and online). The hybrid training takes place in Bandung between 29 November-3 December 2021.  The 'live' participants are 50 representatives of museums from all over Indonesia.
